Vikings: Small shields, no head protection apart from other shields.
Spartans: Decent armor. Possibly the best.
Romans: Best defense, but no weapons can be used.
Dwarves: Good interlocking shields, but they're fictional. Also they'd have limited vision. Long spears are ok but are cumbersome to wield
Scottish: What the heck are they even doing. It's too pixelated anyway
Romans trained and drilled for years to shift their shields so they can make short cuts and jabs at their adversaries, delivering devastating blows. A formation like that was nearly indestructible. They were probably the best
And Spartan armor consisted of a loincloth, helmet, and cloak, believing that a warrior needed little else. They were fierce, fearless, and ignored pain, but beyond the shield and helmet had absolutely no protection beyond their own skill
depends on environment also vikings actually had helmets, thick chain mail and were capable of reaching berserker levels. They took on the most heavily armored in all of europe and won most of the time. They had no fear of death and would embrace it.
Most of this is completely subjective. What kind of criteria are we talking 1vs1, 10vs10, 100vs100, 1000vs1000, 10,000vs10,000? Each of these would drastically change the outcome of the fight.
Partially, some of these groups use tactics that increase the abilities of the units simply by adding properly trained numbers. While others focused more on the individual members skill and when fighting in groups lacked the cohesiveness of the others but could out fight single or even multiple fighters.
Well that and the technology. Say the vikings vs romans. The vikings were used to breaking shield formations and causing chaos among them and would probably win in most fights if it was sword and shield or axe and shield. Whereas if the roman had a full legionary outfit they would win easily. Ballistas catapults and horses would give the roman legionaries a large advantage.
Looking at it historically I'm pretty sure Spartans had already pretty much disappeared by the time Romans had taken over, and then, for reasons I still don't properly understand, Vikings basically crapped all over the Romans, and terrorized northern Britain and Scotland for ages.
The Vikings were Scandinavian and never encountered the Roman armies. Do you mean other barbarian tribes?
Or are you just talking about how the Vikings terrorized the Romanized parts of Europe after the empire's fall?
So your right to some extent, the scandanavians never actually went and sacked Rome, but the other barbarian people's like the goths and such did, and they were pretty similar culturally, so I kinda grouped them in there
