Well, the U.K. doesnt have the same kind of protections for speech that the US does. In that particular county threats, verbal abuse, and insults are classified as one kind of hate crime. So yeah, your offensive message might literally be against the laws that the police are sworn to uphold. https://www.cheshire.police.uk/advice-and-support/hate-crime/
Oh yeah right, as entertainment capitals they have a huge interest in broad protections for speech. Besides, the Supreme Court literally JUST unanimously upheld protections for potentially offensive speech on Monday.https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/15-1293_1o13.pdf
The man does NOT have a point , in my opinion because where I'm from , peoplw fucking organise pogroms against communities on social media. So yes , i think monitoring carriers of inflammatory content should be as important as catching terrorists.
I don’t see why one would face two years for offensive speech. That’s ridiculous. It looks like they’re talking about death threats and such. Even for death threats, two years is it bit much.
It doesn’t look like he’ll get two years, just put on some watchlists and stuff like that. I don’t think he should get any full hate crime punishment seeing as the damage wasn’t physical.
So it's either they take on all of ISIS or they do nothing? There is no middle ground where a government can put feelings of offensiveness aside and help people avoid dying?
Well sure they can fight against terrorists but who said they can't deal with offensive people, it seems like Dick thinks they should focus on fighting all potential terrorists in Britain and can't do anything else, and besides with such a large number of PTs how can the police force just go and take them on? Maybe there's higher divisions working on it
I think Dick is taking a jab at Cheshire's lack of action to proactively do anything to combat terrorism. And further implying that the lack of action is due to not wanting to offend people.

I see the first part, for the second no I think he's just saying like 'Oh they should be dealing with potential terrorists rather than protecting people on the internet'
I'm just saying it's like this guy wants them to not care about citizens being assholes because there are many potential terrorists everywhere as if they are somehow supposed to take them all on somehow
Assholes aren't criminals. Having cops after them anyways is a gross misapplication of police resources. Resources that would otherwise do more good in tracking and catching killers and terrorists.
It ain't about catching them all, that's simply impossible, but the priorities should focus more on actual threats to public safety.

Okay assholes was the wrong word but they said it means prison time so they're criminals, and maybe the cops should be going after other things but surely scanning social media shouldn't take up resources should it? And it's not like that's all they're doing. They're police. They catch bad guys. But can they fight all the potential terrorists? And Dick mentioned they were under investigation, and knows in general how many there are and specific ones. Doesn't that mean someone is doing something about it, possibly higher up forces?
So it's okay for the local PD to act as thought police just because another agency is looking at the terrorists? That doesn't make any sense. Aside from the fact that absolute enforcement of the law is impossible, and that somethings should not be policed, the killers and terrorists should always be the top priority. And when people are being ran down or blown up every week it means that as many resources as possible should be dedicated to addressing that, rather than keeping a look out for mean words.

Well maybe it's the other agency's business, and I just said it probably doesn't take that many resources to work a social media site, and there's a thing called multitasking, it means taking care of more than one thing, and did you notice that these 'mean words'-offensive messages by offensive people-are breaking the law? But n o o n e s a i d i t w a s a p r i o r i t y
