When I was in 6th grade, a group of people went up to me during recess and asked me this. I remembered a similar post on a different website, so I told them "元気(genki)" meant "gay" and they ran around saying "hey (person), you're genki!"

This happened in 2013, so it should give an idea of how old this post is.
