I think that pistol has a laser mounted on it and the laser 'on' switch is mounted on the trigger. That way the laser comes on to aim just before you're ready to shoot. I think he was trying to see if the laser was working. I think those trigger switches are a bad idea but it's sure not an excuse for an idiot shooting himselfe in the hand.
