they didnt change the day, it still was celebrated on the 26th of jan. The gazetted public holiday was moved to the nearest work day, as there is provision for a min and max amount of public holidays per year, determined by state or federal law.
the australian government fired everyone the day after australia day.
You mean they were all on paid vacation?
nah, but exaggeration never hurt anyone.
no hurt, just lies.
In New Zealand we have a law which will 'Monday-ise' public holidays - so if a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, we'll also get the following Monday off. So we're just as cool as Australia haha
in france we roll the dice and pray. And we have a bunch of days that fall 7 days appart (so same day of the week) (around may), so when one falls on saturday/sunday you get fucked hard.
Then again we get double or nothing when it falls on tuesday / thurday because we then go for 4day weekends (adults usually take a day off, and a lot of schools just give it to the students).
Same thing in South Africa, but I think it's only if it falls on a Sunday.
If it's a Saturday, well then you just suck it up cupcake.
Schools will also give a Friday/Monday off if the public holiday falls on a Thursday/Tuesday.
Politician leaders (of two main parties) debate prior to election - and yes, it's true that it got rescheduled so that it didn't clash with Masterchef (which yes the whole of Australia would of watched instead)!
