It's a bad thing if you like it just because it is popular (which might be what the quoted sentence means, it's just not worded correctly) but not if you found it because it was popular and happened to like it.

it's not even a bad thing to like it because it's popular. It might be douchey, but even then for some people it might help them fit in and make their life easier. Also for other people they might just encounter it so much it gets stuck in their head. I can think of at least 20 songs i've had stuck in my head that I don't actually like.

"Imitation is the biggest form of flattery" and it baffles my mind when people get pissed off when you enjoy something that they enjoyed first. It's more of a control thing I think.
