Neutrinos don't go faster than light... They are merely released before a star fully explodes. When scientist first learned of neutrinos they assumed that they were released at the same time as the star visibly explodes and since they came before the light did some thought that they were going faster than light.
Not so sure about that. I think this is in reference to a much more recent error with a detector related to CERN that was at an off site location in Italy.
The bottom line was that they were getting results that indicated one of the three "flavors" of neutrino were superluminal. The scientists involved wrote a preliminary paper and presented it to the community with their data, essentially asking the sciencentific community to suggest explinations of why they were wrong.
The discovery of Superluminal Neutrinos would violate so much of physics and The standard model that they were convinced the data were wrong.
A lot of them to be fair though, were secretly wishing they were right because a discovery of that magnitude would have been unparalleled in physics.
