not as simple as that if they did drill into it the vibrations could trigger an eruption one way suggested by nasa was to drill carefully underneath it and slowly cool the chamber by turning it into a geothermal generator as the water is heated by the volcano it would slowly cool it down it would also generate electricity but it would take a very long time to set up

Is there any actual reason to believe that a drill could cause an eruption?

If I remember the article correctly its about scientists trying to figure out a way to keep it from erupting at all in the future, and that it isn't intended to erupt anytime soon, don't count me on that though

Yeah its a click bait title that is misleading. The article is about scientists researching into harnessing the volcano to use for energy, and in turn, stopping the volcano from erruption due to it never building up enough energy to actually errupt. The title makes it sound like its on the brink of erruption, which is untrue. They are technically preventing it from erruption by harvesting energy from it, but it is in no way a race against the clock to save our lives, there is no danger from the volcano for the time being, and if they perfect this harvesting method there will be no danger ever.

for the time being? haha i forgot you can predict the future. congrats on being a psychic asshole. some people actually care about their future children or future childrens children. so the article isnt pandering to those idiots who think its going to erupt today. its letting us all know that its a possibility.

But it's always been a possibility. Humans aren't immortal, there's a number of things that can kill us on any given day, being petrified of a volcano isn't going to help, especially when it hasn't stopped in 640,000 years and is unlikely to erupt again soon. Scientist's are trying to ensure it never does.

what intelligent person is petrified? articles ive read have said the volcano isnt to explode for thousands of years.. its called being informed. I get what youre saying, there's better things to worry about, definitely. Im just saying its something people should still be informed about. Its still important in terms of science. It isnt click bait like this original comments op was saying. Its called science, science doesnt always happen at this present moment and that doesnt mean its click bait and doesnt mean people shouldnt be informed

No need to call me an asshole, its not about predicting the future. The title is worded to be misleading, so people will read it. If you actually read the article it says what I said. A more accurate title would have been "Scientists are researching ways to harness energy from supervolcano under Yellowstone", just as you said, it perfectly describes the article and people are informed by what's ACTUALLY going on. Of course I believe people should know about it, thats why I explained the article, but the title is clickbait compared to what the article is actually about. There is no reason to instill fear into your readers with a purposely missleading title, I believe many people would still be interested in reading an article about how they plan to harvest energy from a volcano, that's kickass!
