For clarification the sentence should read as follows, Trump just dropped the biggest non nuclear bomb with a blast radius of 1 mile in Afghanistan a city that has 950,000 people.
"Trump just dropped the biggest non nuclear bomb, with a blast radius of 1 mile, in Afghanistan, a city that has 950,000 people." (Since the sentence "for clarification" lacked punctuation I added the commas for my own amusement.)
A city in Afghanistan, not the whole Afghanistan. They know that it's not the whole of Afghanistan because they said that the city had 950.000 people. Afghanistan has 34,66 million people.
This proved that they were referring to the city.
So? We knew the bad guys were there, so we dropped a bomb to collapse their tunnels and hopefully kill some of the fuckers. That's how war works. Would you prefer sending people into that deathtrap? It'd be a meat grinder the likes of which we haven't seen in a good long while, and they'd just take the tunnels back after we leave.
Not to mention the deterrence factor. Iran and Russia are less keen on antagonizing people willing to unleash this kind of firepower.
A few F-22's and an F-35 dropping a digger and then a series of blasts probably could have done the same thing... but given that all those tunnels are now destroyed (if they were there) there is absolutely no way to know.
Digger? Do you mean ground penetrating bombs like the GBU-28, GBU-37 and GBU-57A/B?
Sorry, none of them are deployable from the F22 or F35 and what exactly do you mean by a "series of blasts?"
They are also completely ineffective unless you know exactly where the target is underground and intended for hardened targets.
The GBU-43 MOAB is far more effective at collapsing tunnels over a wider area when you know they are there, but with little precision.
They knew (we don't) exactly where the tunnels were. That entire operation took two years to plan and then another year before the execution order was given. I have no problem with them dropping one bomb and ending it btw.
When I said digger, yeah I meant a ground penetrating bomb. Didn't know they couldn't be dropped by an F-22 or 35. A B-52 would have to be able too. Anyway, the series of blasts would be to collapse the known tunnel entrances, collapsing them and turning what didn't get blown up into a series of tombs.
