I'd like to know more about the specifics of the law there.
It makes sense to deny the validity of the referendum, but what specifically is illegal about it?
When democratic ones want something they do referendum. Democratic government gets answer and don't give a f*ck, does what gov wants. That's how democracy works. Now those Catalonian who was against, or didn't give a f*ck wants it too.
Catalonians have been manipulated by independentist politicians. The fact you are in democracy does not mean you can suddenly ask for a referendum anytime for yourself (ex: I want my house to be an independent state : should I agree ? yes I do ! According to my vote, I'm 100% ok to be independent !). Real democracy would have implied a vote for ALL spanish people (at least, regions around Catalonia).
But on the other way, the answer of the governement (king's speech and police's behaviour) were stupid and backfired...
Democracies only function with the consent of the governed. If a people feel oppressed or marginalised, they have a right to be reasonably heard and represented. If they are consistently ignored, they have an inalienable right to fight for what is theirs.
Catalonia seems to have skipped the step between feeling marginalized and fighting.
Either way, there are obviously issues that need to be addressed, and everyone on the outside looking in would do well to both remember history, and not blindly listen to either side.
My two cents as an American.
I agree that there needs to be a legal referendum, they can't get unilateral independence like they want now. That's just a destruction of all democratic values
