My mom used to grab these all the time when I was learning how to drive... now she respects the fact I'm a MUCH better driver than her and just sits on her phone.
They are also there for extreme stunts with friends.

I’ve seen it used for hanging dry-cleaning - perhaps they just put it in there even though people don’t dry clean things often any more?

I mean when we are 3 people on the backseat of a small car (tight space) I like holding it during curves so I don't fall all over the middle guy. Hell, I hold it a lot, it's become a reflex by now.
