I was just there this past Spring, and it was actually more like the first picture. Of course the grand canal had many different boats on it, but the little tour we got was very peaceful.

It's like that if you get there early too. After about 10am it can get a bit crowded.

I went at sunset, it wasn't crowded for me either. Exactly like the first one

My gondola ride was like the first one. we only encountered one other boat

That's so true, but if you're lucky you can go through smaller streets with less people and it's enjoyable
