What if you've been friends for years, and then you realise that your heart wants more?

Still be respectful as you shouldn't force or guilt someone into a relationship even if it breaks your heart

Respect is an absolute must, and guilt tripping is just plain pathetic.

Luckily I treated her as equal parts friend and love interest.

Ouch... well, you did say you treated her equal parts friend and love interest, so I’m assuming it wasn’t too hard to overcome?

Then again, I don't blame the dad. I'd be freaked out too if my daughter was talking to a boy in a language I didn't know that lived 3000 miles away.

Klingon would've been a great story, like that couple that got married

You did want to be friends, so the past is irrelevant to the principle. It changes nothing. You just have the added complication that unlike a stranger there is history and a bond that you're risking. But the moment you decide you want more from someone- really decide and are sure it isn't just a passing feeling- you must no longer treat them as a friend unless you honestly and truly can live as just a friend forever. To do otherwise will hurt you, and is unfair to them since you are no longer just a pal being nice, but secretly gathering info to woo them and looking for an opportunity to be more. They're sharing and doing things they may not with a possible romantic partner. You become a wolf in sheeps clothing and a fraud. You can't just go from being pals to acting like a suitor though. You must find the best way for your situation to make your intentions clear without making it awkward and sabatoging your current relationship and any chance at more.

Romance is nothing without friendship

There's nothing worse than someone you've put in the friend zone trying to break through.. It's thoroughly off putting. If I don't fancy you then being annoying isn't going to change

okay but its kinda creepy when a guy treats you like a girlfriend and you have no interest in him whatsoever

If you're gonna treat someone like a friend you shouldn't be mad or surprised if they expect you to be their friend, rather than drop their undies because you were friendly with them
