That's what it is at this point. It's necessary for modern life, like running water an electricity. It's like if your electric company charged you more for certain companies appliances based on brand, not how much power is used.
When cars were invented, people didn't think they were important.
Then people realised how great they were and made roads, carparks, etc.
Everyone has a car now, just like almost everyone has internet.
People are making allowances in life for internet (internet cafes, etc.)
The corporations shouldn't be allowed to control it.
I think you make a great point:
In the US, about $.45 of every gallon of fuel goes to taxes. Because of that tax as well as other import tax, refining regulation, epa regulation, and other 'government control' , oil companies have a vested interest in sending lobbyists to Washington to pay politicians for changes in those 'government controls' that give their companies advantages. Those purchased "advantages" mean less competition which results in higher prices and more profits. Lack of competition also causes a lack in innovation and improvement.
.
All of us pay the price in the end because it allows companies to make money the easy way instead of delivering the products and services we want.
.
The internet is no different. Everything that the internet has become exsists because of its unregulated, free market nature. If you want it to get better, you better keep the government out of it.
Net neutrality is a bill of goods being sold off of fear. "Hey, you know those companies that have developed the internet as you know and love....those guys are bad! Let me make sure they dont do bad things!" Once the gov has regulatory control, they now have power and influence to sell back to those same companies!
It's a racket that closer resembles 1920's Chicago mob than "protecting you from bad companies"
Asking for net neutrality is asking for protection from ISPs for an internet that only exsists because of those very ISPs! Irony at its best!
Do you REALLY think these companies won't screw us all over for more money? Why would you want the regulation removed unless you want to do what the regulation prevents?
Yes i absolutely believe those companies will continue to deliver what the consumers are willing to pay for. That's exatly what they've done so far. In fact, that's exactly whats responsable for creating the internet everyone is so afraid to lose in the first place.
.
What you guys are afraid of is monopoly and there are plenty of laws in place fir that. There is no need for government involvement in the industry.
.
Look at what the public outcry did to knock EA in the teeth so that that they snapped back to reality on customer expectation. ISPs would be no different if they made an equally bad decision.
Net neutrality has been around for what, two years? Snowflakes act like it's been around since 1776 and will lose all access if it's dropped. They need to learn that LESS regulation is better, not more.
Because the same companies that own the internet have said they're going to censor the internet and they'll most likely run it like they run cable.
And Comcast is shit do you really want them in regulation of something this big ?
I trust them to run it as they have been rather than be charged extra to do things I've been doing for years with just the cost of the internet, than to be denied access to sites for not having their " package ", or than to have them deny access of sites because they want to make their own version that sucks. The internet should be a free place, for the most part, and a company shouldn't be able to tell you what you can and can't do or say if it's legal. Imagine you work for like T-Mobile but the area you live in only has like Verizon internet and when you try to look at your schedule that site is blocked or insanely slow because of " competition ".
Then they can improve or go out of business. You all know that there's a pretty good chance they'll keep sharing infrastructure, right? It's only good business to take care of your customers. You don't need to worry about good business when there are tax dollars backing whatever you do.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT COMPETITION WHEN THERE IS NONE. If they all start being shitty what are we going to do? NOT use the internet until they stop? OF COURSE NOT. So either we deal with the shitty company we have or switch to the OTHER shitty company that does the same things. Also WHY in gods name would you share infrastructure? Why would you help a potential future competitor? The only reason "shared infrastructure" happens in other countries is because its been legislated for.
Also, in A LOT of areas you have like 1 option for which internet company you can use. They actually section each other off so they don't have to compete with each other. So the next block over may only be able to get direct internet or Comcast and the next block can only get at&t . And that's now WITH net neutrality.
Xdmaniac, it's your irrational fear of "how f*ucked things could get" that they are trying to leverage. In the 20+ years since it's conseption, the internet has flourished faster than any market in history. And now, all of the sudden, theres a need for the government to help it out?
Then people realised how great they were and made roads, carparks, etc.

Have you seen any of the things the government has controlled in recent history?
