I've just realize that a 9V battery is an arrangement of 6 AAA (1.5V each) batteries

They're technically quadruple As. They're smaller than AAAs but work the same if you have some kind of spacer. Still, worth the fire hazard?

Not all 9V batteries are like that. I've taken apart plenty of them and some are a vertical stack of flat cells.

That's how they used to be. Nowadays, even a D cell is just a few AA's in parallel. Poor performance ensues as the weakest cell takes down the better ones. This is one more reason to use rechargeables.
