“Not those diapers dad, they’re for girls” -my 2 year old looking at a box of diapers with a girl on the side.
If a toddler can understand, why can’t university students?
The only difference in diapers are the pictures on the front. Your kid doesn't understand gendered stuff, he just understands that one kid is like him and the other isn't, and probably hears a lot of " no thats for girls " stuff.
They're also like sponges that absorb whatever information is around them, even if it's not said outright. You can't rely on a kid to speak an objective truth.
Actually, by 1.5 years of age kids WILL look at gender stereotyped toys longer. It's from the media, parents, and society. The bigger problem is in our society, by around 3 years of age, if kids see others doing gender 'atypical things' i.e. a boy playing with dolls, they will get harsher treatment from their kids. Also, adults don't even realize that they do this. For example, they will tolerate boys being more aggressive than girls, they will praise boys for work in school and girls for being quiet in school, and during a study that was conducted, they also praised boys and girls differently during martial arts training. Sources all come from 'Children and Their Development. Third Canadian Edition'. (just did my University final in this stuff on Thursday)
The context is that it's an unnecessary replacement for the word unisex.
Along with genderfluid, demiqueer, anything ending in -kin, etc
goodbye, Anakin
