I understand where IndieWire is coming from. You have Leia who was extremely important to the franchise, but out of that entire original trilogy (specifically talknig about those three movies), how many other females were there? Sure, throw away slave girls, but you have all the other male roles like Vader, Luke, Obi-Wan, etc who are also all important. The reboot has a more balanced mix of male to female roles with speaking roles (that actually pass the Bechdel test, or the 'sexy lamp test'). Yeah, having Leia who took no crap from anyone was awesome to see, but we should see more of that. You must question why there is such a skewed ratio when it comes to gender and skin tone - I'm happy it's changing for the better. (disclaimer - I've seen all the Star Wars films only once so If I'm missing something please tell me kindly and don't go all ape on me for getting something wrong!)
