I understand where IndieWire is coming from. You have Leia who was extremely important to the franchise, but out of that entire original trilogy (specifically talknig about those three movies), how many other females were there? Sure, throw away slave girls, but you have all the other male roles like Vader, Luke, Obi-Wan, etc who are also all important. The reboot has a more balanced mix of male to female roles with speaking roles (that actually pass the Bechdel test, or the 'sexy lamp test'). Yeah, having Leia who took no crap from anyone was awesome to see, but we should see more of that. You must question why there is such a skewed ratio when it comes to gender and skin tone - I'm happy it's changing for the better. (disclaimer - I've seen all the Star Wars films only once so If I'm missing something please tell me kindly and don't go all ape on me for getting something wrong!)
Kudos to the original trilogy for avoiding lynchpin syndrome most of the time, too. Half the time when an older franchise has an important female character, they function primarily by reason of emotional connection or political title (e.g., the usual function of "princess") as a sort of sentient plot point for the rest of the story to hang off of.
Yes you can, in this context. Just cast good black actors and make them be coincidentally black or female. Not be this hero that is a hero because they are black and female.
Nope got to have “one of each” identity politics tells us we are nothing but our group. Of course my opinion shouldn’t count since I’m a straight, white, middle class male.

Guys, you'e doing all this to your very own society. Keep on having fun.
Thank you. Also can we say that Padme led an attack on the visceroy and fought for independence in the Senate even when her life was constantly threatened and she was pregnant with twins
