My dad was pretty distraught over the whole thing but not to this extent...

Why do people move out in America?
Here we stay with our parents. We earn, we take care of them, everything. But we also stay in the same house. It is a cultural thing here. We stay with our parents. Is it a cultural thing there to move out?
In the US, it's kinda fucked. If you're not quitting high school when you turn 16 to get a job then you are looked down by half of society, but if you do then you're looked down by the other half. If you don't move out when you turn 18 then you're a lazy sack of shit even though getting a house is nigh impossible nowadays and you're lucky to find a place with a working toilet with a mattress on the floor. Some parents are kicking their kids out when they turn 16 because they're old enough to drive to work, so that means they can support themselves... which means they end up dropping out of high school and essentially prostituting themselves off if they are a chick.
If you go to college then you probably just wasted several years of your life and will get a job that pays you less than people who didn't even go to high school except now you have $50-100k of debt to pay off.
Then there is the corruption in the police station in my area where you can smoke meth, abuse kids, and kidnap children from their legal guardians for a month or two with no consequences.
Overall, the US is a pretty fucked place particularly where I live.

Woah. That's... I don't have words for it. I understand about kids moving out but, why would parents kick their children out of the house, just because they turned 16. They are just some goddamm teenagers. How are they supposed to find a job, get a house, feed themselves. Geez.
It's a cultural thing to stay with parents here too
The first born son is supposed to live in his parents house for his whole life and take care of the parents (it's considered ungrateful to send your parents to nursing house) other sons should/can stay too if the house has enough room
The girls live with the parents till she's married
Its kinda traditional and expectation in Vietnam
@rosalinas@spookykink57
what if she doesn't want to marry? Is she looked down for moving out? And if the first born wants a life anywhere else? Or like if they get a job far away or something like that?
Genuinely curious
Where I live we try to move out as soon as possible, but it's kinda hard because of the economy

For us it isn't mandatory to stay. But generally people stay. And if she doesn't want to marry then she either stays with the parents or she moves out, generally they stay and earn and provide. And if the first born gets job somewhere far, the parents go with him, if he is the only child, or else he goes and the other siblings take care of parents.
And staying with parents doesn't means that we don't work or stay at home. We earn and provide if the parents get old enough that they retire. Even though they are earning, we earn. So it's not difficult.
In the US, we have these really huge houses (and small families) to get as far away from each other as possible and then, when the person is a legal adult, they get booted out to live on their own. Repeat.
Thanks! Sadly, it sounds like you take better care of your elders than us.

Unfortunately some people, who are heavily influenced by the Western Culture, think it's cool to move out and leave their parents be. But still not everyone has changed.
Here even your own parents Will tell you to move out when you are old enough. It's almost like an "adult ritual" to start your own life.
People will think that you are not succeding in life if you stay with your parents.
I like the idea of moving out, guess it's cultural :)

That's what I asked. That is it cultural? And apparently it is. Nice. Every society has a different culture.
