Of course we have a choice. I am a Muslim girl, and before anyone told me it's nice to wear it, I chose to cover me up myself. Don't judge something based on half knowledge. Period.
In first world countries ( or at least America) they have the choice at puberty to wear it or not. ( at least from what I've been told )
But guest, the difference is nuns choose to go and be nuns, muslim girls are born into Muslim families and depending on the area are forced to wear more ( like burka and abayas ) with no choice on if they can or not. Thats the issue.
Just because you aren't forced to wear it doesn't mean you can ignore the ones that are and say it's not true.
I think the issue this post is trying to address is that people assume Muslim women don't have a choice. Like dyroque pointed out many do have a choice and sir_spiderman points out many do not. However, strangers should not assume someone is forced to wear any kind of head covering of any religion without first knowing their full situation.
There are countries where women will be punished by law or mobs if they don't dress "properly". People that come from those countries tend to hold on to those values, I've seen as much myself. Those are the problems. Not the clothes themselves.
In places like Saudi Arabia women are forced to cover up. Hell they can't even drive there or walk alone.
While not all places force Muslim girls to wear it, the main places muslims are they are forced to wear it.
I actually went to a school with a large population of muslims and most of the girls came from families that made them wear it, they didn't get the choice, and I live America not some third world oppressive place, so the only reason was because of the families. So for me it is safe to assume most girls are being forced to wear it elsewhere even though they aren't always.
And no, this post is trying to say hijabs are the same as habits and while the base is the same, nuns choose at a later point in life to do this. They aren't forced to by their families religion. So if their family doesn't allow them to have a choice, they won't have one, unlike nuns.
Because his argument that muslim women aren't treated poorly in first world countries doesn't apply when the vast majority of all muslims live in third world country with no first world country being muslim in nature.
Yeah it's almost as if every religion has a history of oppression and violence against women...and while this is not always the case now, I have no patience for anything that says you have to cover yourself up for other people. (Including a lot of anti-nudity laws. The human body is not shameful or inherently sexual.)
The human body isn't shameful but I'd rather not subject children to strangers bits and danglers and make it easier for sexual assault and rape to take place
I completely understand your point but I think you're missing mine: I shouldn't have to cover myself up because someone else has a problem with it. And in fact, nudist communities have fewer instances of sexual violence. Public decency is one thing but telling girls to cover up so men won't sexualize them is unacceptable.
There's a LARGE difference between being forced to cover everything but the face and nudists
I get that girls shouldn't have to cover themselves up but public nudity is a stretch
I cover myself up not because it's acceptable for men to sexualize women but because sadly that's the world we live in. Look around you. Women are sexualized in literally every movie, tv show, ad or whatever so if I would rather have men not ogle at me I would cover up I don't understand why you cannot understand the concept of how covering up does get you less attention than when you're walking around with all your bits exposed and I say this knowing the amount of attention I got before I covered and after. Of course no woman deserves to be ogled at by men and men need to be taught to respect women. It's a generally accepted rule that you shouldn't steal from someone yet we have to lock our doors at night because yelling "people should not be stealing from other people to begin with" doesn't help :)
Nuns are reallllllly uncommon these days. Very few Orders still where the traditional habit shown in these images. They mostly go for modest clothing with the occasional head covering. Again, they have the choice in which order the join and most have leeway in their strictness. Last I checked there was also no physical punishment for not wearing a habit, and they also are still considered Catholics in good standing in orders that don’t wear habits. Sound different?
I come from a third world 100% Muslim nation where the girls can choose to cover or not with no physical punishments. Does that sound different from what you assume the world is?
A nun's habit is kind of a work Outfit. Also, the idea behind is, that she is actually married to Jesus (they are wearing wedding rings, too).
So they are the exception, not the rule. I know no other example for Christian women to"cover" themselves. Also I never heard of a nun being attacked with acid because her scarf was out of place. Or of police squads checking that these women are hidden enough.
Question to the different muslim habits: why are some allowed to show their face and others Not? That's like completely wiping out these women's existance in public. No more people, just moving black bundles. To be honest, they creep the hell out of me.

Would have been good if they showed an ACTUAL Nun, not Audrey Hepburn in "The Nuns Story". Simply because you will get idiots out there that'll think she was a Nun at some point xD
I get the thing with the headscarves but I never understood the whole thing with the body sheet. I mean the whole point of it is modesty and so you're not an object of desire for men yet you're still just as likely to get assaulted etc if you were wearing normal clothes. So aside from being heavy, warm and uncomfortable what is the point? It doesn't seem to do what it was intended to. You might as well wear what you want. I also think in certain jobs (such as hospital staff, nurses, doctors, police etc) and things like passport photos that a full face covering shouldn't be allowed for security and because people should be able to meet face to face who they're dealing with.
If one society think that covering the whole body is a way of life for the sake of modesty and obedience to God, then it is THEIR value and belief, and we have to respect that. If other society think that naked in public is fine, then it is THEIR value and belief, and we have respect that. We ARE NOT the one who's being forced to cover or uncover our body! It's THEM with their DIFFERENT values! It's not like mass murder or something. It's just a goddamn clothes!! So why the fuck do we should even care? Why don't we MIND OUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS?
If people get killed for not covering LITERALLY everything but the eyes then it's a human rights issue not just a difference in values.
Women choosing to cover themselves because of their religion is fine. Hardly anyone has an issue with that because they can CHOOSE it.
And just because WE aren't the ones being forced to cover up doesn't mean It isn't an issue.
But if you want to just ignore people getting murdered in terrible ways for showing their hair line go the fuck ahead.
I would watch their show too. This could be a super cute anime of pen pals and it switches from girl to girl and they're really secret agents and super nice bods etc etc as an anime would have all girls.
Plus, being fully covered deters Muslim rape gangs and groups that sexually assault women in the west. Surely you've read the news about these very common groups in Europe and recently the US. So really, the hijab is quite practical. So please don't judge the Muslim girls and women for wearing rape-deterring clothing.
99% of muslims in Afghanistan support sharia law.
91% in Iraq
84% in Pakistan
And so on. Even within the United States, muslims support islam. Almost all muslims on this planet support sharia law. Grow up and stop pretending otherwise.

And covering up isn't rape deterring
Thank you Mattis and Trump.
