To take a different perspective, people who eat healthy food and lots of clean water are going to be able to recover much quicker
Not saying it would cure polio, but it would prevent a plethora of other conditions/illnesses
Either way, they should also be getting more food and water. It's not as if there's a worldwide shortage of either, we just can't distribute it efficiently.
When it does get distributed, it creates a nation of takers, rather than entrepreneurs who want to create a stable market system, sadly
It's the selfish, tribal mentality present in most third-worlds countries that causes poverty in the first place
Err
No.
Africa was a shithole well before colonisation
It's the technology and money our (mostly) capitalist economy has facilitated that allows us to give 0.7% (£182 BILLION) of our GDP in foreign aid that does go some way (but nowhere near enough) to solve the problem
It was Europe's fault, when they drew borders all over Africa without even laying eyes on the lands they were claiming. Even if it wasn't great there before, Europe made it a lot worse.
Again, no
Where has Africa, on it's own, got in the last two centuries?
Virtually nowhere, compared to the UK, the US, Norway, Sweden, etc.
Where did the industrial revolution happen? England
Before that, we were still world leaders, but the industrial revolution was a paradigm shift in terms of technological (and thus economic) progress
Meanwhile, in Africa, they still throw spears at each other
While the RAF and USAF hand out aid packages
I’m pretty sure Africa was doing fine before foreign countries came in a took control, stripped them of their resources, and then abandoned them. The West fucked up their countries
Well- let's take a look. You do realize that "the last two centuries" mark the height of African colonialism? A fortune in diamonds, precious metals and other resources have been exported out of Africa in the last 200 years, through most of those periods locals were either given no compensation or a laughable slice of what a European or western supplier nation would receive. Asides occupying and controlling territories many foreign powers have installed dictators or supported coupes to best ensure those "friendly" to this type of commerce remained in power. Until just recently Native South Africans were second class citizens within their own country. Under apartheid blacks were barred from universities and schools were designed to educate a class of "black laborers." The Afrikaners campaigned specifically on a platform of ensuring white economic dominance (verbatim). So how were native Africans supposed to succeed again?
There are those who say that during apartheid Africa was more economically prosperous (don't for one second think I'm advocating apartheid)
Milkshake, Africa may have been "doing fine", if "doing fine" includes tribal warfare, commonplace infant death, and never becoming a global economic force
If "the West" had completely left it alone, Africa would be virtually the same it was 200 years ago
I refer to my one of my original points, the UK's prosperous economy allows us to help out foreign countries to the tune of over £150 billion
How much of that wealth came from African colonization or exploitation to start? How much wealth flows out of Africa into the hands of private businesses that are allowed to operate by governments like the U.K. And USA? And I'm betting it was more profitable during apartheid. I also bet that Walmart would be more profitable if they could pay employees pennies a day and ignore all humanitarian and work place law. I bet slavery was very profitable for a time too- but the slaves didn't see the profits. The "taboo" of online debate- the Nazi party took a battered Germany and made it an economic and industrial super power in a few decades. There's a lot of money to be had at the expense of others. That's why it's such a popular way to get rich, and why most countries make it illegal. While occupying nations were passing laws to protect their own people they are still capitalizing off of exploitation in other countries, and manipulating foreign affairs to ensure the protection of cheap goods
Timbuktu used to be the most prestigious university in the world, founded around the same time as Oxford. Without the Islamic golden age in Africa, 90% of the knowledge left from the Classical era would have been lost while Europe was stuck in the Dark Ages.
Also, Shaka Zulu went on a warpath with just those spears and feet and took down entire regiments of calvary and regular lines. He was a brilliant tactician.
