Robert Morin worked in the library 50 years. He was a millionaire who ate frozen dinners and drove an old car. He left $4 million to the university, specifying about $300,000 went to the library and trusting the university would use the rest in the best way to serve students. Most was spent on acedimic programs but 1/4 went to a video scoreboard for the $25 million dollar recently renovated stadium. The only link between Morin and the stadium was that the university claims in his last years of life Morin had began watching games and memorizing players etc. as a fan. Morin didn't want a public funeral and had a private service before being buried in a family plot. The Uni put a plaque on a bench near the library to recognize his service. I don't know that scoreboard was the best use of that money, but I also don't know it wasn't as managing a university and its finances is a complex thing. I do think it's tasteless however and doubt Morin would have approved- but I didn't know the guy.
