Depends on what the gear box controls. If its a garage door, yes its steep. If its a nuclear generator not so much. (Yes those are just random examples, I have no idea if a nuclear generator even has a gearbox)

If the part goes to something that cost millions of dollars, you can bet its going to cost 10s if thousands on its own, if not more, so yes, it does matter what it controls. Thats like saying a car battery should cost the same as a AA.
And yes guest, but its the validity if the statement its making that is being debated.
it's not overcharged, like graphic design, can take 5 minutes for something, but charge $3,000-5,000 for it. It's not the 5 minutes, it's the 15 years experience to be able to do it in 5 minutes
Years ago, probably still used as a backup, aircraft used mechanical gyros for navigational system. The set of 3 gyros cost around $100,000 thirty years ago. Satilite ,gps, laser gyros were still pretty new.
The owners reaction alone suggests that it's over-priced. It would probably be have been cheaper to replace it.
Also this kind of stuff is usually quoted before hand.
Bad story is bad.
And if it's a car, then you could buy a whole new car for that price.
