The marine exercise is to teach teamwork not strength, if you can't work as a team in the marines you're as good as captured/dead. I'm not discounting Scottish badassery in the least just making a point.

Not diminishing Scottish badassery either- but even seen an Olympic power lifter win the men's marathon at the same games? there's a reason that even though all those Olympians are in great shape they don't just hop into every event. It's called specialization. Marines don't train to be able to lift as much weight as possible. They train to carry 60+lbs for miles, running as needed. Marines are trained for The most likely combat situations with the basic skills and conditioning to have the best chance of doing their job and surviving across the widest range. Throwing a tree half a football field isnt a common battlefield necessity, and extra bulk means you need extra calories to keep it up. That's where the term "lean mean fighting machine" comes from. Soldiers are trained into the most practical condition for combat and all that might likely entail, not to be the best athletes at any particular sport or in the best shape for any one task other than doing their duty.
