I can't stand PETA, but cooking lobsters and crab alive is pointless and cruel.

Well it's not pointless, it makes it all the more fresher. It's still cruel though.

Not necessarily for freshness, also to minimise the bacteria dead crustaceans produce that make humans sick when consumed

I'd recommend you read David Foster Wallace's "Consider the lobster" and then decide if that's what you want.

I thought crustaceans can't feel when they're being boiled

How could they possibly know that ? They have nervous systems, don't they ?

I don't think they do actually.

Yes they do actually and there are entire courses dedicated to studying the nervous systems of crustaceans

The best way to kill any lobster or crab or what have you is to place them in the freezer for a while and they die in their sleep from the cold. It is better than a knife to the head or a pot of boiling water or oil. Yeah still a bit mean but the better of the choices.

Except no one likes frozen and then reheated food.

You don't freeze them you only do it till they died like a hour or something.

They'll keep them alive until they're thrown in the steamer. The crab pictured is on a grill. Kill them first with one quick stab.

All you have to do is stick a knife in the poor thing for a quick second and boom, it's done. The same goes for all other crustaceans and animals that we eat. Give them the dignity they deserve as fellow creatures of this earth and don't let them die this way, it's just wrong plain and simple.

And if someone is going to give the "it keeps the food fresh" argument most chefs keep the animal alive seconds before they stick em in the pot so that isn't really an argument here.

I worked at a RedLobster when I was a teenager and I always stab them before putting them in the steamer. Seem more humane.
