Phones, cars, and computers are three examples of things that can be risky to buy used. There are many things that could go wrong and many ways to scam that can be hard or near impossible to detect- and cost you lots of money or trouble. If you can’t buy from a known and trusted source at least make sure to have a written bill of sale with as much specific information about the exact item, any known issues, and at least the intended purpose and expectations of promises functionality. Test the device before buying, and important: have personal identifying information or some guarantee of how you can find them if the need arises. For private sales that means insist on an ID. Take a picture or list the information on the bill of sale with one copy for each of you, and if you list it insist you verify it matches their id. This isn’t cool proof but will give you enough information to use legal action or the possibility of legal action should problems later arise.
