I will admit luxury cars are very well designed i thank everday that when i got into a crash it was in a lexus instead of my 95 tercel. had airbags for my legs and everything.
There is a difference between a car that can be built in a day and one that takes a week or more to build. Given half the choice again I'm definitely buying a retired law enforcement vehicle again, aside from weighing about 2000 pounds more than stock they have extra plates and other protective factors.
I get 16 mpg in winter 18 to 20 in summer, which isn't far off from a stock explorer, plus mine still has the police engine and computer modifications so it can and will haul ass. I bought it a year ago with exactly 139,000 miles and put another 30,000 on it.
There are a good amount of people out there who own cars without a Bluetooth radio. Even then there are people who answer and pick up the phone instead of using bluetooth. With those 3-5 second of pulling out a phone to answer, a person can travel the distance equal to, or less than, a football field. Between that time traffic could stop.
Another problem is not listening to certain cues such as tires screeching due to slow traffic, trucks and other vehicles around you. Even loud music is a distraction.
Talking on the phone is harder to "disengage" from than music on the radio or talking to a passenger. Also, a passenger can sense you tensing up or catch other cues when you are about to need to pay more attention to traffic.
