Rabbits fighting

Okay serious question from a non native speaker. I know bunnies are the small fluffy ones, but what's the difference between hares and rabbits? In german we only have one word for the tall ones and one for the bunnies.

For one, rabbits legs are far less skinny. Two, they really do not have that kind of balance
