Just because a seen is done on the computer doesn't make it any less valid in cinema by default

The prequels had an over dependency on cgi which made the film look super fake. I know it's fantasy, it's not supposed to be realistic. But when I can clearly tell that something is 100% cgi, it destroys the immersion of the movie.

The Star Wars prequels were tough to act in. Everything was CGI. Nothing in the scene was real. Even something like The Hobbit, which had a bit too much for Ian McKellen liking, had real sets. Yes, stuff like the background and elements in the scene were CGI but at least there was some visual reference to play off of.

There are expeeicences in cinema that would be far from possible without Lucas' push for CG tech research. Whilst he certainly did underestimate the value of practical effects going forth, the contribution he made to cinema are huge in that regard.

In terms of raw material, maybe. But CGI isn't made for free. People spend their time and effort creating it just like they created those models and map paintings used in the original trilogy. Hell, just CGIing that last fight scene in Sith would've taken 1 person 1000 lifetimes.

actually, i find this really exciting. Seeing how far cinema and technology has come in just 22 years to the point where we can make incredibly realistic sets with just a computer. There are professionals who can paste Young Carrie Fisher's face onto someone else and make me question whether or not it's actually her. Non-CGI sets aren't a thing of the past completely, with the advancements in Special Effects makeup we can create beautiful creatures like those in Shape of Water or the newest Star Trek films. Technology and film making capacities have dramatically improved since the introduction of movies as we know them. It's scary, but also incredible.

but CGI General Tarken in Rouge One was just creepy. It just looked wrong
