No it's real, the water isn't deep enough to fully sink which is why it sunk in the first place.

It had already sunk. Like @eaweber said, the water isn't deep enough for it to fully sink, so it stopped there. There was no emergency at the point this photo was taken.

The captain wanted to show off to a fellow captain who was on land and sailed close to the island to perform a "salute". As you can see by the picture he got a bit too close.
