I think it should depend on the reason of contact, and that if the employee refuses they can't get in trouble since they're not on the clock. If it's something I can answer in a couple of minutes then go ahead but if you're asking me to come in or do a bunch if shit then no.
Lucky you. I Worked at Victoria's Secret briefly. They'd force their employees to call in on days they weren't scheduled to work, to find out if the company needed them to come into work that day.
Agree with diyrogue mostly though. I don't mind if a company needs to call to see if I can cover a shift (how else are they supposed to get anyone in when someone calls in drunk or dead at the last minute?), or ask the occasional question, but making employees take work home, or calling them all the time is just no. Work to live, not live to work.
The only time I can see taking work home with you is a salary job... and even then there are limits. Whenever I meet up with my mom for a vacation her boss STILL spams the fuck out of her knowing she's on vacation and is going to ignore his shit... it's fucking stupid and a waste of time for everyone involved... including me. I wanna be on vacation with my mom, not listen to her bitch about her dumbass boss with no fucking boundaries.
As long as it's not harassing, there's no reason someone who you gave your phone number to calling you should be illegal.
