I'm clearly a little brain dead right now, but I don't get it...what does the 'this is August' part mean and how does that prove she's not alive?

There's no way she'd still be alive 6 months after being buried. A few days, maybe even a week. But definitely not six months.

There's an alternate version of this where a Russian woman is buried in spring and is found in winter. I can't find the joke right now but it basically ends by saying: "The ground is frozen, can't dig you up. You must wait for summer." And she is true Soviet, and wait for summer.
