There's a button on the exterior of the bus when they're not inside, here

Most have a release valve or lever that allows the doors to be operated by hand, its also used for emergencies and is often labeled as such.

Not sure about other buses around the world but I drive red London buses a there's an open and a close button on the inside above the door and an open butten next to the door on the outside
