Artificial grass/turf- aka “Astro turf” is actually available in a wide range of colors commercially. Lower grade turf is nylon, and higher grades are assorted polymers and can be colored to specification of whoever orders the turf. Several wholesalers and a few retailers offer the option. Colored turf can be used as a distinctive decoration or land scaling feature, or can be used in combinations on sports or other fields to create semi permanent designs (such as team names or logos) that won’t wear or wash away as easily as other methods used to color turf. You can order almost any color which a plastic can be made, provided you are willing to meet a minimum order of your color isn’t available. Such turf can be made soft or rough, and to fit many special purposes and often works better than grass at the job and can cost less long term. There are questions on comparative environmental impact, and artificial turf traps more heat than grass and can get dangerously hot in direct sunlight.

Why do you know so much about turf?

Turf research. I’m always looking for novel materials and applications for various personal and professional projects. Plus it would be a lie to say I’d never considered actually replacing lawn with turf, at least in some areas. So two birds with one stone, I had dug in to info on turf to see if it could be used in other applications I needed a relatively cheap, UV resistant, weather resistant, and easily formed sheet substance for- and figured if I ever needed to land scape with turf it could come in handy.

Most artificial turf is pretty tough compared to grass. Just as some natural grasses are much less pleasant to playnor slide on, some artificial turf is more compliant than others. The backing of the turf had some effect on how impacts are felt, with some backings absorbing and thus dissapating force better than others. The turf itself is usually more important to tactile feedback and friction. The biggest factor is the design and purpose. Cheaper artificial turf tends to be harsher to the touch (and often eyes.) More expensive turf can be made very close to imitating real grass in feel. In cost, artificial turf is more to install per sq/ft than equivalent grass. That is one factor that makes “cheaper” turf more common. Another is that artificial turf tends to have its benifits over longer periods of use. So long lasting turfs are often selected. These “tougher” turfs are often tougher to the touch as a result of their durable construction.

Lastly and more minority- the shape of each extruded blade has some impact on “feel” of the turf as well as look and durability. Many shapes are available for the “blades” of artificial grass. The shape of each blade can change its performance. Properly selected and matched to the application, artificial turf can be very pleasant, as much or more so than grass. However in the real world where costs such as installation, maintenance, and down time for re installation and repair are a concern, compromises are often made which lead to a less than ideal experience. But yeah. Generally falling on artifical turf sucks. It’s almost as bad as falling on gravel sometimes.
