It was only a matter of time, man. You honestly think that the biggest and most advanced military in the world, that's using both railguns and lasers, isnt going into space? Get real.
I get a feeling that Tyson is an opportunist and a politician as much as anything. There is no industry as well funded or supported in the US government, possibly the world, as the US military. While taking war and weapons to space isn’t ideal from a philosophical view, he says himself that human nature scares him, and he feels it’s inevitable we would bring the military to space. So why not turn an inevitable loss in to a victory by putting the astronomical spending of the US defense budget towards improving our space program? As he says himself: “Anything you can do in space is a capability.” Like so many other technologies, any military space developments would eventually trickle down and in effect improve our abilities for exploration and study. A second space race- what do the “big” countries like more than trying to oit do each other? Yeah, this time it’s with weapons, but maybe he feels that like the nuclear arms race MAD will stop total war. Who knows. Just what I get from him.

The US Defense Department is in fact the largest employer in the world.
It is. Hence why many defense related industries can be quite lucrative, and a solid way to fun a scientific project- especially one with the financial, legal, and materials procurement challenges of research on or in space, is to find a military application and get defense funding. You gain a bunch of muscle and freedom when it comes to permits and other things that often serve as obstacles to research, and while the defense budget isn’t limitless they certainly have more money to play with than NASA. Once one country starts a space force, others will follow, and the cycle repeats as spending is increased to maintain “space superiority.” If you want to advance a science but can’t find it or get backing- turn it into an arms race. The resources and money spent splitting atoms wouldn’t have been donated nearly as quickly or as readily if the technology wasn’t so valuable to military applications.
