Trappers set traps. If there was a coyote or fox den there the trapper would set a trap there. If bait was permissible it would be food a coyote would eat. Stray dogs are likely to wander into a pack of coyotes territory and possibly be killed in a territorial dispute. This stray was instead trapped. I submit that the canine’s previous owner was the negligent one not the trapper.
We'll start with the fact that this type of trap is barbaric and unnecessary, even if legal.
I'll add that there are alternatives to this sort of trap-- even other variants of leg hold traps-- that do not cause this amount of suffering and damage to an animal.
There's also the fact that leg hold traps should be secured with a chain for the exact purpose of being able to find them again. This trap was wrapped around the dogs toes. If the trap had been properly secured, the dog would not have been able to pull the trap off the chain without ripping it's own foot literally in two.
This leads round to the hunter seemingly not giving a crap WHERE the animal they caught ended up, as long as they suffered a horrific death (there is no other alternative with these traps).
How do you know it wasn’t secured and the tether wasn’t broken by the dog? I think it’s bullshit that citiots impugn all hunters and trappers as savages and unnecessary.
There's also the age of the trap, which makes it seem as though it had been actually out there for a long time before Hermione stepped in it. It was partially rusted, I believe, which is why they had so much trouble opening it. Meaning someone set it and left it with no intention of returning, or they forgot where they put it, meaning they didn't mark it properly, AND, again, it wasn't properly secured.
Hermione was there for over a year. It's a rural area, but not THAT rural from what I can tell. Someone set it in a forested area outside someone else's house, where it was common knowledge a dog was running around, and, likely, kids and other people could be, too.
These traps may be legal in some places, but that doesn't mean there aren't basic rules you should be following in the process of torturing something to death
If you bother reading what I wrote instead of insta-responding with questions I'd already answered, you'd know. The trap was literally clamped between two of the dog's footpads and toes. The dog could not have pulled the tether loose without severing it's own toes. You can watch the video in the source if you wish to see the paw clearer.
Also: not one single person said all hunters and trappers are savages and unnecessary. Ive been friends with several hunters. We literally can't survive without them.
These traps are cruel, whether you want to admit that or not. But just because one hunter did a poorly executed thing and exhibited negligence doesn't mean all hunters should be crucified and flayed in front of their children.
My only advice now would be to take a deep breath, try and calm down, and hopefully find a way to stop hitting the "I'M GOING TO GENERALIZE THIS STATEMENT UNTIL I CAN JUSTIFY HOW OFFENDED I AM AND INSULT EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME" button so quickly
You managed to try and take what should be a simple, heart-warming rescue mission, and try and turn it into a shit storm all because you blew the meaning behind a statement completely out of proportion, but hopefully you can feel better about yourself now that you've defended an entire group of people that nobody on this post attacked
I read news reports all the time about hunting and trapping related stories and the slant is always against us. Im weary of it, and the post appeared to contain more of the same.
Fair enough. I can certainly understand where you're coming from with that, at least. And Anyone who deludes themselves into thinking hunters aren't necessary, or that they're all sadistic scumbags who just want to prance around on the still twitching corpses of their kills needs to have their heads examined. And then knocked against the wall a few times.
On that subject, I don't hunt, but I don't see any legitimate reason for others NOT to, and I only care if they hunt incessantly for no purpose, or when they cause unnecessary levels of suffering. It's hard to kill without causing some distress, and that's just how it is, but there's also no reason to not kill the animal as quickly and painlessly as you possibly can imo. And that's why i'll never see an exception to using the steel leg traps, personally
Coyote traps are fair play usually under the logic that coyotes are devils that pull calfs out of their mother as they are being born as well as eat deer alive from the backend forward. There isn't a coyote season just like there isn't a boar season because both are menaces.
Oklahoma can't really do shit to do that kinda stuff to us cause there would be extreme amounts of yelling and screaming by the farmers and ranchers and many country home owners. Outlawing boar hunting is retarded. Those thing are not only extremely damaging to crops and property they are also very capable of killing humans and their animals.
None of that is remotely relevant to me, nor is it an excuse to torture an animal to death.
Humans beat cats to near death and nail them by their feet, to electric poles.
Wasps are mean Motherfuckers, but I don't trap them under a glass to starve slowly or burn in the sun, OR pull their legs off one by one. I smack them with a swatter. Quick and done.
If you watch the video you can see this dog's bones from the trap, the skin infected and rotting. I don't see any real reason for defending causing that amount of suffering unless you're a sadist. There are other ways of dealing with them
Those other ways are also employed along side the traps. Still isn't enough to prevent our stock from being killed.
And you're right. It isn't relevant to to you. You aren't affected by the fact coyotes and boars kill and destroy stuff. You haven't watched someone bleed out from a tusk wound to the artery. You haven't had to find one of your cows dead from coyotes killing it during child birth. You haven't had your pets mauled to death by a coyote that somehow got inside the fence round your house.
Good job, you did the whole "making an ass out of u" thing. There are coyotes all over where I live. You liiterally have no idea if I'm affected by it or not, but congratulations, you have managed to take a statement and twist it around to not only come to the wrong conclusion, but use it to react in ignorance as well.
I've chased after coyotes barefoot that were ripping open the stomachs of peoples' animals. Cows? No. Their pets. I've watched eagles eating out the entrails of horses that were killed. Dealt with the maimed corpses of rabbits and other animals.
And the reason not a damn bit of this is relevant to me is because I consider humans (most, not all, and the number seems to dwindle by the day) to be more intelligent than these animals. And only a sadist could ever take any joy out of forcing that much pain on another creature.
As I already said-- there are literal alternatives to the steel jaw traps. Some of these are ACTUALLY STILL JAW TRAPS. Ones made of different materials that hold just as well and don't force another creature to suffer slowly.
Good god, of all the posts I expected to cause such stupid drama, this was not it
There's no joy involved. It's not something done for fun or for pleasure. It's protecting family, pets, and livelihoods. Look up how much a single cow is worth on average. Look up how much boars destroy yearly.
And there are alternatives. Look THEM up instead of trying to justify it. And while you're at it, look up the kittens and dogs that have gotten trapped in these things. You ever seen a cat bleed out through it's stomach being punctured by one of these traps? An owl with it's feet lacerated or it's wings broken? A dog with it's face crushed? If not, I'm sure we can find you a video. Let's not forget eagles, raccoons, rabbits, skunks, foxes, deer... Pretty much any animal that exists in rural areas.
And do you have any idea how much people value their pets? I guarantee it's more than the cost of a cow or a fence. I don't care any more or less about the cow because you paid a lot of money for it-- if money is your main issue in all of this, then you may want to consider going into a different line of work
If you feel so strongly in favour of steel traps, I'm not sure why you came to this post in the first place
I really don't want to argue with anyone anymore on this post.
I can't really say I'm sorry if anything about the post offends anyone else, at this point just agree to disagree I guess. We're not getting anywhere, and I really wanted this to be more about the actual feel good part of the story-- which was a good thing that happened to a deserving animal, and hopefully we can all at least agree on that
Them and the dodo are probably the animal channels I've watched the most.
I can't get over the amount of dedication HopeForPaws (and the organizations they work with) will put into saving even the smallest/oldest animals.
