While that is true, some of the women wear them and take pride in them and if that's what they want to do then I don't see any point in condemning them for that.
I have a Muslim friend who immigrated to Canada, and he has a wife and three daughters. I asked him once what his opinion on the veils/etc were and all he said was essentially: "look. I don't care if they want to wear them. Or if they don't. It's not even the regular women who wore them in the first place-- it was only the wives of the prophets that wore them. My only opinion on it is just Don't go back and forth between wearing them and not. Make a decision and stick with it."
Obviously not all women are given the option of when not to wear the veils, but not all of them wear them by force either. And I know a lot of people hate when I say anything positive about men on this site for some reason, but I think it's important to remember they're not all evil dickbags trying to force women into submission
But you are right in what you say-- and there's no excuse for anyone trying to force her into the niqabs/veils/etc to "protect" themselves.
If she IS forced to wear her veil, then my concern becomes what the fallout for her will be from this picture circulating and gaining popularity.
Not that we shouldn't talk about this stuff.
It's just something I could see having severe consequences for her, and I find that a bit scary. Which is part of why I say I don't know how to feel about it
She just looks happy in this pic and that felt like a good thing.
In Canada we're not allowed to smile for most official identification stuff, so it could be a situation like that, maybe. I don't know enough about what type of ID that is, just throwing out a possibility. She doesn't look miserable in it, just kind of "meh."
Obviously they make women wear that for official documents, women in Iran won't wear such a veil ordinarily. And believe me the mullas want to force women to be like the photo, but they won't get thei way. Viva la resistance
The joke was they wouldn't want anyone stealing her away so the behavior would be that of a n overly protective jealousy-fueled boyfriend. It's a joke pointing out how absurd some of Iran's "traditions" (go back to before the 70's and look at Iran, totally different) are.
I'm sorry you didn't get it or misinterpreted it, that's my fault I guess.
If it's any consolation, I understood it. It literally didn't seem that different from me saying she was pretty, but I've just about given up on what offends people on this website lately o.o
The desire in me to open fire is nearly overwhelming in situations like this, but I'll instead, I'll try and offer some Logic, even though I understand it's not welcome in the arena once someone's decided they're offended:
You're offended by a relatively harmless joke where literally everything he said is exactly what everyone else said:
-She is beautiful/attractive
-Men feel the need to force her to hide because of this fact.
I know you're not interested in any of this, mind you, since you already stated you have such a comprehensive grasp on the situation, so this is more for anyone who didn't catch what happened the first time round.
I stand by my reaction.
