We also sometimes spell word with the superfluous U that the British use. Example: “Remember the time we threw your fucking tea in the harbour before we kicked your ass off the continent, took over world power status, and made you our snaggle-toothed lap dog?” See, for the most part we spell it “harbor” but context matters. Happy 4th!

Well, they were British at the time, so it makes sense that they would have started saying it that way.

The British way is "4 July." Not "The Fourth of July." "The Fourth of July" is the name of the holiday. The date is "July fourth."
