This is common not just in fast food, but in all products. While in many developed nations modern markets you can save more money by buying bulk sized things, often retailers count on people being lazy or shitty at math. If you take two sizes of a product at the store, then divide each products contents (oz, sheets, etc.) by the price, you can see what you are actually paying per unit of product and make a more direct comparison in price. Playing with a consumers assumptions and expectations is an easy way to make money. You can also assign value to various menu ingredients and items by comparing like things (cheese burger/double cb/bacon cheese burger) and see similar phenomenon. Often companies use “loss leaders,” an item priced below or at its cost to them, knowing you won’t just buy that. For instance a fountain drink with your nuggets had a huge profit to it and is a likely purchase, and fewer people are likely to want 20 nuggets compared to 10.
