If she were a super hot black chick I doubt the backlash would exist... but thry turned her into a she-troll. I am super-fucking-serial... look at the troll in Hellboy
Hot or not, the outfit was absolutely shit and makes her look like a cheap prostitute you find on the street (and that wig!)
Not mention, she looks NOTHING like Starfire. Not even a lightly bit
They could have gotten anyone and paint them orange but they picked a black women for "diversity"
She's an alien, I don't care that she'd black. They could have given her skin a dusting of orange for tinting and still kept that deep dark skin tone and it would have been very stricking. My SOLE issue is that gods forsaken wig and costume. Not only does the costume look cheap, not just in low virtues, but actually cheaply manufactured, but garish, it clashesh horribly. Suade boots with metallic pleather dress and shag fur coat topped off with a pinkish Ronald McDonald wig. Worse, it doesn't fit, so it make her look lumpy. This almost looks like a torpedo job against the actress. @keepsake, I believe the source as to why they believe she looks like a sex worker is that that exact coat, as well as the purple metallic pleather, was often used in movies, in particular blackploitaion films of the 70s, to depict both pimps and prostitutes.
It's a cheap, colourful, ugly costume. Prostitutes wear cheap, colourful, ugly clothes (and lots of time it comes with an ugly wig and that hideous fur coat)
Among literally anyone that can fit the role, they picked her, someone who looks nothing like Starfire, not even remotely
It's easier for pigmentation to show up on pale skin than melanin skin.
Why do you assume that the performance of the character would have been better if a white person had played her? And why did the picture go viral, you reckon?
Literally NO ONE said it was based on her skin color or gender. It is based mainly on the atrocious costume. Only one person has said anything about her being black and its someone who makes a habit of trying to stir up trouble
Yes, and there have been many cases where characters have been altered, either for social diversity or because a specific actor just fit too well. Most recently, that I can think of, is Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot is an Israeli woman, not white as has ALWAYS been shown, but she KILLED that part. But by all means, whi is your favorite Tamaranean actress that you feel would have been better for the roll.
I think they probably changed some things in the costume because of the backlash. If it was in the beginning stages, there still would have been development. I still have hopes.
There was no excuse in the first place given the quality of Robin, Dove and Hawk's costumes. This should have never left the Salvation Army discount bin.

And all of them could have been better
