I disagree. Regarding official IMF missions shown in the movies- Ethan Hunt has a crap record. Minimum spoilers ahead:
MI1: mission: Retrieve CIA NOC operative from Prague embassy: status: failed. Agent killed. The rest of the movie is Hunts attempts to clear his name and not an actual mission.
MI2: retrieve a virus and it’s antidote: status: failed. All virus samples and known data destroyed. Antidote shown as destroyed but possible retrieved. Viral carrier alive. Virus and antidote can be synthesized from carrier tissue.
MI3: mission: retrieve operative “Lindsey.” Status: failed. Agent killed in transport. The rest of the movie is Hunts attempts to clear his name.
MI4: mission: infiltrate the kremlin and father information on “Cobalt.” Mission status: aborted. Kremlin bombed, mission aborted by IMF team. IMF disbanded as a result. The rest of the film follows Hunt as he tries to clear his name. He is tasked with getting more info- but it is not an official mission.
