During the revolution ary war and civil war there were little boys not old enough to fight but old enough to leave home. It was only supposed to be ages 16 to 18 because a soldier was supposed to be 18+. But many kids were found being Drummer boys. One of the youngest known was only 12.
One of the worst parts was many soilders aimed for the drummer boy. And it is one of the reasons they got rid of a drummer boy in war.
Most people don't fully know all things drummer boys did.
They help the army march. By the muisc/beats being played the troop knew what to do in the battle. The drummer boys could be heard over all the screams and guns so it was easy to signal to other people across the field or to other drummer boys to carry information to the Seat or other head leader of the troop.
They didn't go away because they were aimed at. They went away because communication technology improved. And enemy soldiers aimed at them not because they were heartless, but because without the drummers, the opposing army's communications could be crippled, leaving them disorganized and vulnerable. It was good strategy. Cold, but smart.
I said it was one of the reasons. I didn't say it was the only reason. And yes they would kill the drummers to stop communications. But it was also do to the drummer boy was usually beside a high level army men so by many people firing in that direction they would likely to hit a higher up man like a general.
Also true. Which, of course, served the same purpose: remove the army's connection to its leadership. Cut the head off the snake and the body dies, to quote the old saying.
