We had no such training in school. There was a band class, but to be in band you had to pay. There was also a “glee club,” but it was optional.

I don't think that is true. When trying to think of an instrument for all kids to use in a general music class, it is cheap, small, and portable.

It's quite an easy instument to learn to read music with as well.

My son's elementary school forced us (parents) to sit through an actual recorder concert performed in the evening for 1 full hour.
