Low crime, high cost of living. The last time I was in Japan was over twenty years ago. Disney Land was a trip. At 6'3", it was a sea of black hair in every direction. The people were mostly friendly, (most counties people are along as politics is avoided), but little things like someone just grabbing my arm to see what time it was on my watch took a bit of getting use to. Their vending machines were pretty crazy then and I guess they have a wider variety of them now.
It's an amazing country with a very lively culture. Just keep in mind they also have giant wasps, and that sexual assault is still under reported and out of control, especially on trains.
Well even if I'm still hella frightened every time, I'm also sadly used to "moderate" sexual assault (people following me saying dirty stuff or feeling me up in crowded buses), because where I used to live if you report them they just sign a paper at the police office recognizing it was bad behavior and they're out the same day (and you become paranoid because of the payback possibilities). At least there I wouldn't be so scared of being followed home if it's mainly in trains and I could enjoy the civilized part of society as well!
+ I've also heard that the ones who feel you up are mainly buisness men whose reputation is important to them, so I would just turn around and start randomly talking to them, or grab their hands like we're friends. No fuss, but they wouldn't do it for a while.
And regarding wasps... They tend to land on me but I've never been attacked :D
That's horribly depressing. :/ what country do you live in if you don't mind me asking? I have no idea if it's mainly business men-- accounts I'd heard were pretty much any men (but usually men, not boys), and varied from taking pictures up skirts, to actively forcing their fingers inside school girls. Their reputations don't seem to matter much since it's the girls who are usually forced into shame and silence sadly. Not that this is the only part of Japanese culture (<- not implying it's exclusive to them, either) or even the biggest part. It's just a genuine concern to be aware of.
As for the wasps, they're mostly in the country anyway haha. I just hate wasps, and the Japanese ones get gigantic <.<
I live in France, but all parts of France are not like this! I grew up in a neighbourhood that was nice and cool until it changed and drug dealers & car stealers took their habits there. The mayor did nothing for too long. And after just selling stuff, burning cars and breaking bus stops, they started to be comfortable enough to treat girls like this. Now the cops avoid it ("zone de non droit"). So I've learned to avoid their glare when they're selling cocaine or changing the plates on a car (they're like Pokemon trainers^^) but the harassment thing, there's no good way to avoid it. The town is Brest, and more and more parts of the town are becoming like this. The part where we lived and the one where my sis used to work were the worst, I used to wait her in front of her workplace until 5 guys started harassing me at the same time. (She however is 1m85 tall and has never been "annoyed").
But now I live in Quimper (still in France), and it's really a lovely place, I highly recommend it!
That's terrible. :/ at least you got out of there. Why people ever think this is an okay way to treat someone or that it will get them anywhere is beyond me. I guess every country has areas like that, though. I've never heard of Quimper, but I bet it is haha. Paris gets all the glory, but France has so many lovely little places.
