One of my friends is a tiny little thing. Barely 5 foot skinny as a nail. She's got anemia which keeps her small which she has almost died multiple times from and that mixes with her gluten allergy (and a few other things) to make eating gluten rather dangerous and can cause much more than the usual extreme abdominal pain. It could potentially cause permanent damage to internals.

And that's what annoys me about the trendy gluten haters, they act like gluten is horrible for everyone, it's not. It's only a problem for people with actual intolerance but because the hipsters have to be si annoying about it as soon as someone with an actual issue basks about gluten they get brushed off, and it can lead to serious problems.
From what Ive heard, theres at least one good thing about the hipster trend : it made gluten free food much easier to find / covering a wider range in supermarkets and shit (McDonalds where I live offer a gluten free cheeseburger for instance) so theres that.
And to be honest... at some point if you have a serious problem with gluten (as in not a hipster problem) then when you order gluten free food you should probably specify that youre actually sick. Sure it sucks you have to do that because of a stupid trend, but even if not for that, kitchen staff can be overrun, or just make an inatention mistake. Pointing out that its an actual hazard avoids that.
Definitely true about the increase in availability. Before there was maybe two shelves of a single bay. Now you can have an entire aisle

At a fast food place I used to work at we always asked allergy or preference and if they said allergy then we'd do everything to make sure there was no contamination. Switch gloves, use a special pan and pizza cutter, the works. Preference gets made on a normal pan
I don't get old people shitting on younger generation. Isn't it a good thing that we can now diagnose it and give appropriate diet to people who suffer from it?
There was a post on pinterest the other day about people having REAL intolerance/allergies to gluten and as bethorien said it can get pretty fucked up pretty quick, like end up in the hospital for 1 slice of bread-quick. So unless the grandma was allergic to leather belt we can't really compare.
