Well I'm pretty sure they don't just wander around an office building all day searching for someone who doesn't exist. They have a job to do, especially an intern, because they are there to learn a specific field. As for not being "any fun", you are at work, it's not supposed to be fun and games, get off the playground and back to the real world where you have to actually work rather than goof off.

It's literally a job where you go to work. I would think you save that shit for, you know, when you're not on the clock.
I feel like I should elaborate that I have no issue with having a little fun at work, but people that goof off and don't do their jobs are half the reason I switched to a job where I'm the only person I rely on. I can't really speak for an office environment, this is just from my factory experience.
There's no way that could be going on for many interns without a boss finding out so either the boss either doesn't give a shit or finds its humorous. If a new hire or an intern can't get along with the others or can't take a bit of office humor in such an environment they don't belong and should be let go as their presence would lower the average moral of the department which would in turn lower the productivity of the department.
It's a way for the guy to meet everyone and get familiar with the workplace. I think that's a super important quality for an employee to be able to deal with. I doubt the guy works there very long.
That and it's their first day. Who TF gonna be productive on their first day?
By all means send him around to all the departments so he knows where they are all at and the quickest way to each of them without having the waste the time of anyone else giving them a tour.
