The island is less than a kilometre across, the foxes swim there simply to kill the (native) penguins. And yes, they are an introduced species in Australia and a declared pest with eradication plans designed to remove them completely from a delicate eco system where they have no place.
You didn’t pay attention did you. They swim from one island to another, yes. But they weren’t native to either island. They’re an introduced, foreign, invasive species that have no place causing that harm, and are therefore being guarded against and eradicated.
Still cruel and sad, because humans are the ones who inadvertently introduced them and now have to kill them off, but that’s the way it goes.
