Slam fire for those who don't know is a firing mechanism shotguns used to have before it was made illegal to make shotguns with slam fire functionality. As long as you had the trigger depressed, you could rack the pump back and forth and each time you did it would fire a shell. In short, you could fire a hell of a lot faster than other shotguns. However, slam fire shotguns had rightly earned the stereotype of being volatile firearms since accidental misfires were prevalent. They were made illegal to manufacture out of worry of self harm that could be caused to the user, or to people who happened to be nearby that were not intended targets. One such incident was when two police officers were apprehending a suspect, who fired at them with a gun. The officer armed with the shotgun was racking the pump to load another shell after they had shot at the suspect, and forgot he was holding the trigger down. He had turned to face his partner, and shot him by accident, killing him instantly.
Slam fire isn't illegal. Due to fighting constant legal battles most gun manufacturers discontinued the manufacture of shotguns capable of slam fire, except to police and military.
