I only watched the first few movies, was it defined as a magical perception item, or is that a behind-the-scenes trick?

Presumably behind the scenes to make characters like Hagrid appear bigger than normal people. But I can't actually find any other info on it (in 20 seconds of googling).

how it works: it's a perspective-trick. the dude is sitting wide in background, the table and the girl more in the front (in front of the camera) because of perspective, it looks like the dude is sitting too on the table and is smaller, but he isn't.
