Seriously that pisses me off so much. As a guy who is writing jokes and trying to get into open mics, it fucking sucks man. People want fresh content every time. EVERY TIME. It's not that easy to come with great jokes you know. Sometimes, there are going to be similar jokes and repeat jokes.
Also, different comedians can have similar jokes. Just because a popular comedian did a joke earlier and a guy at some open mic did a similar joke, that doesn't mean that he has copied the joke. Similar jokes is not copying, same jokes is copying.
Also, please don't commit joke theft people, it's the one rule you gotta follow.
Sorry about the rant.
As someone who has watched the same stand up routines multiple times, I can tell you this isn't necessarily true.
Also, memes prove to me that sometimes things are funny only because of the context they have from being repeated.
Hell, some stand-up relies on that same repetition. There is a point in Eddie Izards "Dressed to Kill" that he starts doing part of the act in French. So you can't understand a word he is saying. Except that most if what he is saying is so clearly referencing his own act, that it's hilarious. My explanation doesn't do it justice.
I get that people want new jokes, and that makes sense, but you definitely need to give some slack for repetition.
Naaaah. Fake news. Ever hear of a comedy tour? Where a comedian goes city to city telling the same joke? Ever changed the station, skipped a track, or wanted to leave somewhere because a song was “played out?” Then we have to realize that the same jokes were being told thousands of years ago that are still being told today. Look at the Pompeii graffiti. Change a few things for modern times and it would look right at home on a modern city wall, or even in memes. Ever see those memes saying that X meme and Y meme are the same thing? They are. And memes repeat and are recycled as well. “Delirious” has been popular for 35 years. Shakespeare is still getting repeats of his comedies. But what about “Despacito” or “Macarena” which some people thought 1 time was too many, and many others would have been fine if they’d only heard it a few times?
